U.S. forces say they have completed strikes on Iranian military sites near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded with missile attacks on an American base in Jordan, marking a sharp escalation in tensions between the two sides.
Iran's top joint military command announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, including oil tankers and commercial ships, saying any vessel that will attempt passage will be shot at.
An explosion has been heard in the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, state media reported on Thursday without providing further details.
U.S. forces began launching additional strikes against multiple targets in Iran at 5:15 p.m. EDT (21:15 GMT), U.S. Central Command said in a post on X on Wednesday.
"The strikes are in response to Iran’s unwarranted and continued aggression," the military said.

U.S. President Donald Trump defended his handling of inflation after new data showed consumer prices rose at their fastest pace in three years, saying he expected costs to fall once the war with Iran ends.
Trump argued that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route, have temporarily increased the prices of fuel and other goods, contributing to higher inflation. He maintained that oil prices would drop significantly when the conflict is resolved, despite warnings from analysts that supply disruptions could continue for months and keep energy costs elevated.
Rising inflation has become a political concern for Republicans ahead of the November midterm elections, as higher prices may also delay potential interest-rate cuts by the U.S. Federal Reserve. The issue is particularly sensitive because Trump campaigned on lowering inflation in the 2024 election, yet his approval ratings on economic matters have declined as the cost of living remains a major concern for many Americans.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday said over 100 million barrels of crude had passed through the Straits of Hormuz as part of what he called a secret U.S. mission to support oil tankers.

"We're going to be attacking them, attacking them very hard," Trump told reporters at the White House, citing Iran's downing of an Apache helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz.
The president reiterated that Iran will be hit on Wednesday.
"We want a deal that is meaningful, we want a deal that works," Trump added about the negotiations with Iran.
Trump said that Iran has already agreed to not obtaining a nuclear weapon, but the agreement still needs to be signed.
Iran would be "unwise" to challenge U.S. further after it carried out strikes overnight in retaliation for the downing of a U.S. Apache helicopter, U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday.
"Right now, they’re defensive strikes to ensure we protect our people. Again, Iran would be unwise to challenge us further," Hegseth said during a visit to the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. "President Trump is seeking a deal. But not just a deal, a great deal on behalf of the American people so that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon."
The U.N. nuclear watchdog’s Board of Governors has passed a U.S.-backed resolution calling on Iran to declare its remaining enriched uranium stockpiles and grant inspectors access to verify the material, a move that could complicate ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
The resolution, submitted by the United States, Britain, France and Germany, was approved by the 35-member board with 21 votes in favour, three against and 10 abstentions.
According to diplomats, Russia, China and Niger voted against the measure.
The resolution urges Iran to provide the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with complete information on its nuclear material inventories and allow inspectors to verify them without delay. The issue has gained urgency after Israeli and U.S. strikes last year damaged Iran’s enrichment facilities, while much of the enriched uranium produced before the attacks is believed to have survived.
Tehran argued that IAEA inspections were disrupted by the attacks and has warned against further pressure as indirect talks with Washington continue.

New Delhi said it continues to work closely with Omani authorities as the search operation proceeds.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has warned that Israel’s military operations in Syria and Lebanon have reached a point where they could threaten Türkiye itself, describing Israel’s actions as “aggression” that poses a wider global risk.
Speaking to lawmakers from his ruling AK Party in parliament, Erdoğan said: “The attacks by Netanyahu and his network of murder on Lebanon and Syria have brought the issue to a point where it also threatens Türkiye,” adding that Ankara’s security was closely linked to that of its neighbours.
He urged the international community to take a firmer stance, saying Israel had been emboldened by the “silence of the international community”

The United States said its military has completed a series of strikes on Iranian targets, including air defence systems, ground control stations and surveillance radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz. The operation, launched earlier this week, was carried out in response to the downing of a U.S. helicopter, according to a statement from U.S. Central Command.
The strikes mark a significant escalation in tensions, targeting critical elements of Iran’s military infrastructure in a strategically important region for global energy shipments. U.S. officials said the objectives were to degrade Iran’s defensive capabilities and deter further attacks on American assets.
Iran has since responded with missile strikes, with its Revolutionary Guards saying they targeted multiple sites at a U.S. base in Jordan, including aircraft hangars and a command-and-control centre.
