'I love the inflation,' Trump says as prices rise amidst Iran war

Reuters

U.S. President Donald Trump defended his handling of inflation after new data showed consumer prices rose at their fastest pace in three years, saying he expected costs to fall once the war with Iran ends.

Trump argued that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route, have temporarily increased the prices of fuel and other goods, contributing to higher inflation. He maintained that oil prices would drop significantly when the conflict is resolved, despite warnings from analysts that supply disruptions could continue for months and keep energy costs elevated.

Rising inflation has become a political concern for Republicans ahead of the November midterm elections, as higher prices may also delay potential interest-rate cuts by the U.S. Federal Reserve. The issue is particularly sensitive because Trump campaigned on lowering inflation in the 2024 election, yet his approval ratings on economic matters have declined as the cost of living remains a major concern for many Americans.

IAEA demands access to verify Iran’s remaining enriched uranium

Reuters

The U.N. nuclear watchdog’s Board of Governors has passed a U.S.-backed resolution calling on Iran to declare its remaining enriched uranium stockpiles and grant inspectors access to verify the material, a move that could complicate ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

The resolution, submitted by the United States, Britain, France and Germany, was approved by the 35-member board with 21 votes in favour, three against and 10 abstentions.

According to diplomats, Russia, China and Niger voted against the measure.

The resolution urges Iran to provide the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with complete information on its nuclear material inventories and allow inspectors to verify them without delay. The issue has gained urgency after Israeli and U.S. strikes last year damaged Iran’s enrichment facilities, while much of the enriched uranium produced before the attacks is believed to have survived.

Tehran argued that IAEA inspections were disrupted by the attacks and has warned against further pressure as indirect talks with Washington continue.

U.S. completes strikes on Iran as Tehran retaliates with missile attack

Reuters

The United States said its military has completed a series of strikes on Iranian targets, including air defence systems, ground control stations and surveillance radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz. The operation, launched earlier this week, was carried out in response to the downing of a U.S. helicopter, according to a statement from U.S. Central Command.

The strikes mark a significant escalation in tensions, targeting critical elements of Iran’s military infrastructure in a strategically important region for global energy shipments. U.S. officials said the objectives were to degrade Iran’s defensive capabilities and deter further attacks on American assets.

Iran has since responded with missile strikes, with its Revolutionary Guards saying they targeted multiple sites at a U.S. base in Jordan, including aircraft hangars and a command-and-control centre. Tehran has warned it is prepared to escalate further if additional U.S. action is taken, raising concerns about a broader regional confrontation.
