EU Commissioner for Climate Action, Wopke Hoekstra, participates in the Pre-COP29 meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan, on October 10-11.
With the COP29 UN Climate Change Conference approaching in November, this event brings together global ministers to advance discussions on key climate issues, such as climate finance, international carbon markets, and the transition away from fossil fuels.
Hoekstra will take part in several sessions, including the plenary discussion ‘Road to COP29’ and breakout meetings focused on climate mitigation, adaptation, and finance. These sessions are designed to pave the way for successful negotiations at COP29, addressing urgent global challenges like loss and damage and the need for stronger climate commitments.
Besides, Hoekstra will deliver a keynote speech at the side event ‘Roadmap to Mission 1.5,’ which highlights the need for countries to prepare stronger Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) that align with the Paris Agreement's target of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C.
Hoekstra will also hold bilateral meetings with several prominent global leaders, including UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, Egypt’s Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad, France’s Minister-Delegate for Energy Olga Givernet, and Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability Grace Fu.
These discussions aim to enhance international cooperation on climate action ahead of COP29.
