President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are expected to speak in the coming days as Ottawa seeks to defuse tensions over a new 35% U.S. tariff on non-agreement Canadian goods.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are expected to hold talks "in the coming days" following the United States' decision to impose a 35% tariff on Canadian goods not covered by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, a Canadian official said on Sunday.

Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s minister responsible for U.S.-Canada trade relations, told CBS News’ Face the Nation that discussions between the two leaders are likely soon and that there remains a window for negotiation. “We believe there is an opportunity to reach an agreement that could result in a significant reduction—or even the removal—of these tariffs,” LeBlanc said, expressing optimism about resolving the dispute through diplomacy.

The tariff move has sparked concern among Canadian exporters, with officials in Ottawa seeking to avoid an escalation in trade tensions between the two close allies.
