Teyana Taylor and Stellan Skarsgård were among the first winners at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, as Hollywood’s annual awards season got under way in Beverly Hills.

Taylor won best supporting actress in a film for her role in 'One Battle After Another', a dark comedy led by Leonardo DiCaprio. Accepting the award in tears, she dedicated her win to “my brown sisters and little brown girls,” saying their voices mattered and they belonged “in every room.”

Skarsgård, 74, won for his performance in the Norwegian family drama 'Sentimental Value'. He used his speech to urge audiences to return to cinemas, saying films should be experienced collectively on the big screen.

'One Battle After Another' leads this year’s film nominations at the Globes. The film follows a former revolutionary who is forced back into action to save his daughter, with Taylor playing his partner. It is competing for best musical or comedy against Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet, and Bugonia.

Comedian Nikki Glaser returned as host, opening the ceremony with light-hearted jokes aimed at Hollywood’s biggest stars. She poked fun at DiCaprio’s dating history before quickly apologising, setting a playful tone for the evening.

In the best drama category, 'Jay Kelly', starring George Clooney and Adam Sandler, is among the leading contenders, alongside 'Frankenstein, Sinners and Hamnet'. Acting nominees also include Chalamet, Dwayne Johnson, Michael B. Jordan, Jessie Buckley, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

The Golden Globes are one of the first major events in the run-up to the Academy Awards in March. While Globes voters do not influence Oscar outcomes, wins often boost momentum for films and performers.

This year’s awards also include a new podcast category, while HBO’s 'The White Lotus' leads television nominations, ahead of Netflix’s crime drama 'Adolescence'.
