Germany’s foreign minister called on Iran’s leadership to urgently provide credible assurances it is not pursuing nuclear weapons and to return to negotiations, amid growing fears of military escalation with Israel.
"We are still ready to negotiate a solution. However, Iran must act urgently ... it is never too late to come to the negotiating table if one comes with sincere intentions," Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said at a news conference alongside his Jordanian counterpart.
Wadephul affirmed that Israel’s concerns over Iran’s potential nuclear ambitions were justified and reiterated Israel’s right to defend itself.
"The Israeli decision to do something against this threat is comprehensible," he said, expressing regret over the civilian casualties reported on both sides following recent airstrikes between Iran and Israel.
