Liberia's ex-speaker charged with arson over parliament fire

Liberia's former speaker of parliament, Jonathan Fonati Koffa, has been charged with arson and several other crimes after a fire destroyed the House of Representatives in December.

Police say Koffa was "strategically involved" in the blaze, which broke out just one day after protests erupted over efforts to remove him from office. Five other lawmakers have also been detained.

Koffa, who had faced impeachment over allegations of corruption and abuse of power, has denied any connection to the fire. But investigators say he used his position to coordinate sabotage as early as November 2023.

He and three other lawmakers were taken into custody and sent to Monrovia Central Prison on Saturday.

No one was inside the Capitol building when it burned on December 18, but the fire destroyed the joint legislative chambers. U.S. investigators later confirmed it had been deliberately set.

The case comes after months of political gridlock and infighting in Liberia’s legislature. Koffa resigned as speaker last month after surviving impeachment but losing support among lawmakers.
