A man drove a car into a group of people in the southern German city of Passau on Saturday. Police say the motive may be personal and have not ruled out that the act was deliberate.

The 48-year-old driver reportedly hit five people standing on a sidewalk, including his 38-year-old wife and their 5-year-old daughter. Witnesses told police the incident may be linked to a custody dispute.

The driver has been detained, and police say an investigation is underway. Passau's criminal police are leading the case.

Officials say one person suffered moderate injuries, and four others were slightly hurt. Local media reported that up to three people may have been seriously injured.

Authorities say they are still working to confirm the details and the driver’s intent.
