At least 21 athletes have died after the bus they were traveling in plunged off a bridge in Nigeria’s northern state of Kano.
The group had been returning from the National Sports Festival, where they had spent the past week competing.
According to officials, the driver appeared to lose control while crossing the Chiromawa Bridge on the Kano-Zaria expressway. Authorities suspect fatigue and excessive speed following a long overnight journey may have caused the crash.
More than 30 people were on board. Several others were injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Kano has declared Monday a day of mourning. Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzu announced that families of the victims would receive monetary compensation and food aid.
