Zelenskyy: Russia’s defence of Iran highlights need for stronger sanctions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has underscored the urgent need to ramp up international pressure on Russia following Moscow’s defence of the Iranian regime.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday that Ukraine will attend a meeting in Istanbul on Monday, following a proposal from Russia.
Writing on Telegram after holding talks with senior officials, Zelenskyy confirmed the decision, stating, "I outlined Ukraine’s positions ahead of the meeting in Istanbul on Monday."
He added that Defence Minister Rustem Umerov will once again lead the Ukrainian delegation.
No further details were provided about the agenda, but the announcement marks a rare moment of alignment between Kyiv and Moscow on engagement, as diplomatic contacts remain scarce amid ongoing hostilities.
The meeting comes at a time when international mediators have increased pressure for renewed negotiations to end the war, now in its third year.
More updates are expected following the conclusion of Monday’s talks.
