South Korea’s liberal presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung pledges to restore communication hotlines with North Korea and strengthen strategic ties with the U.S. and regional partners if elected, aiming to improve regional stability amid ongoing tensions.

Lee Jae-myung, the front-runner in South Korea’s upcoming June 3 presidential election, announced his intention to reinstate direct communication channels with North Korea, including the military hotline that has been inactive since 2023 due to worsening relations. He emphasized the importance of stabilizing ties with China, which he described as having deteriorated under the previous government. Lee also committed to advancing a comprehensive strategic alliance with the United States and addressing historical and territorial issues with Japan through cooperation among the three countries.

While his main conservative rival, Kim Moon-soo, shares similar goals of strengthening the U.S.-South Korea alliance and engaging North Korea diplomatically, some of Kim’s advisors have criticized Lee for shifting policies to appeal to moderate voters.

The debate highlights the challenge South Korea faces in balancing dialogue with North Korea and addressing security concerns in a volatile regional environment.
