A tragic plane crash early Thursday morning shook a quiet residential neighborhood in San Diego, California. According to officials, there are two dead, eight injured.
The crash happened around 4 a.m. in the Tierrasanta area, when a private jet, a Cessna 550, slammed into several houses and cars. Assistant Fire Chief Dan Eddy described the scene as devastating, with wreckage scattered everywhere and jet fuel causing fires to spread rapidly.
“All the cars on both sides of the street were burning,” Eddy said. “There’s jet fuel everywhere.”
While it's still unclear how many people were on board, officials confirmed that those who died were on the plane. Fortunately, no residents in the neighborhood were seriously injured or needed to be hospitalized.
Firefighters quickly began evacuating people and working to put out the fires still burning in homes and vehicles.
The crash happened near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in heavy fog. Visibility was so poor that you "could barely see in front of you," according to Eddy.
A local resident, Christopher Moore, said he and his wife woke up to the sound of the crash, saw smoke and flames, and rushed to get their two children to safety. “It was terrifying, but we just had to act fast and get out,” he said.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the jet could hold up to 10 people, but the exact number of passengers is still unknown. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is now leading the investigation into what caused the crash.
