A ceremony was held on Friday (14 November) to honour 20 Turkish military personnel who lost their lives in a military cargo plane crash near the Georgia-Azerbaijan border earlier this week.
The C-130 aircraft, which had departed from Azerbaijan for Türkiye, crashed on Tuesday (11 November), marking the highest military death toll for NATO member Türkiyesince 2020. The plane was carrying a 10-person maintenance team for Turkish F-16s that had previously participated in Azerbaijan’s Victory Day celebrations, along with the flight crew and maintenance equipment, according to the Turkish defence ministry.
The bodies of the deceased were repatriated on Thursday (11 November), and a farewell ceremony was held the following morning, during which their coffins were placed on planes to be sent to their hometowns for funerals and burial. The ceremony was attended by prominent officials, including Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus and Defence Minister Yasar Guler.
Later on Friday, a funeral service for three of the victims was held in Ankara, with hundreds of attendees, including ministers and party leaders.
