Russian researcher arrested in U.S. for smuggling frog embryos

Russian-born scientist and Harvard University research associate Kseniia Petrova, 31, has been criminally charged in the United States for attempting to smuggle frog embryo samples into the country, federal prosecutors in Boston announced.

Petrova was detained at Boston’s Logan International Airport after Customs and Border Protection agents flagged her luggage for additional screening and discovered a box containing clawed frog embryos. She reportedly told authorities that she was unaware that importing biological materials required formal declaration.

Petrova has been held for several weeks in an immigration detention center in Louisiana. Her arrest and detention have sparked legal action, with a federal judge in Vermont hearing arguments in a lawsuit Petrova filed, alleging she has been unlawfully detained by the Trump administration.

Prior to the criminal charge, the U.S. government had indicated its intention to deport her back to Russia. If convicted, Petrova faces up to 20 years in prison for the smuggling charge.
