Nicaragua has pulled out of UNESCO after the agency recognized La Prensa, an exiled newspaper, as part of its global press freedom awards.

Nicaragua has withdrawn from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) after the agency honored the exiled Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa as part of its press freedom awards.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said she "regrets" the decision, warning that it will deprive the Nicaraguan people of the benefits of international cooperation in key areas such as education and culture. She defended the organization's decision, stating it remains firmly within UNESCO’s mandate to support press freedom and freedom of expression.

In response, the Nicaraguan government condemned the recognition of La Prensa, accusing UNESCO of siding with what it called “traitors, slaves, and lackeys of colonialism and imperialism,” and claimed the organization had abandoned any sense of objectivity.
