U.S. President Trump says the American movie industry is under threat and is imposing steep tariffs on all foreign-produced films in response.
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 100% tariff on all movies produced outside the United States, in what he calls an effort to protect the American film industry.
In a social media post, Trump said he had authorized the Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to begin implementing the measure immediately, though he did not provide specifics on enforcement.
Trump claimed that Hollywood is "dying a very fast death" as a result of foreign governments offering incentives to lure filmmakers and studios away from the U.S.
The move comes amid escalating trade tensions with China, which in April slashed the number of American films allowed into its market in retaliation for Washington’s 125% tariffs on Chinese goods — a major blow for Hollywood in the world’s second-largest film market.
