Authorities say they stopped a planned attack on Lady Gaga’s Copacabana concert, which drew over 2 million fans.
Brazilian police say they have foiled a bomb plot targeting Lady Gaga’s historic concert, which drew more than 2 million people to Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro.
The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro state, in coordination with the Justice Ministry, said the planned attack was linked to a group promoting hate speech and the radicalization of teenagers through violent and self-harm content presented as a form of social belonging. Investigators say the suspects were also attempting to recruit minors to carry out coordinated attacks using improvised explosives.
According to city officials, an estimated 2.1 million people attended the pop star’s performance.
The investigation was launched after a tip-off from Rio state police intelligence and a report from the Justice Ministry’s Cyber Operations Lab. Authorities uncovered digital cells using coded language and extremist symbols to encourage violence among youth.
A man identified as the group’s leader was arrested in Rio Grande do Sul for illegal firearm possession, while a teenager in Rio de Janeiro was detained for storing child pornography.
More than a dozen search and seizure warrants were executed across the states of Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso, Rio Grande do Sul, and São Paulo.
