Spain’s Interior Ministry declared a state of emergency on Monday after a nationwide power blackout struck much of the Iberian Peninsula.
The emergency status will be applied regionally, depending on requests. So far, Madrid, Andalusia, and Extremadura have asked the central government to assume control over public order and other key functions.
The scale and cause of the blackout were not immediately disclosed. Updates are expected as authorities respond.
