A top envoy from President Donald Trump’s administration arrived in Moscow for talks with President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, just hours after a high-ranking Russian general was assassinated in a rare car bomb attack in the capital.

Tensions soared in Moscow on Thursday after Russian General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a targeted car bomb explosion, a highly unusual act of violence in the heart of the Russian capital.

Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed the general’s death, saying an improvised explosive device packed with pellets detonated inside a Volkswagen Golf vehicle, killing Moskalik instantly.

The attack marks one of the most high-profile assassinations of a Russian military figure since the start of the war in Ukraine. While several Russian officials and military-linked figures have been targeted over the past two years, such attacks are rarely carried out in Moscow.

Svetlana Petrenko, spokeswoman for the Investigative Committee, stated, “A criminal case has been opened, and investigators are pursuing several leads, including possible sabotage or terrorism.”

The assassination comes as Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s special envoy for peace negotiations in Ukraine, arrived in Moscow to meet with President Vladimir Putin. Witkoff's visit, intended to restart talks on a potential resolution to the conflict, now unfolds amid heightened tensions and domestic instability.
