The Emmy Awards delivered a night of familiar faces, surprise wins and a few milestones, with Apple TV’s horror comedy Widow’s Bay emerging as the biggest winner.
The show, about a cursed New England town, took home a record 14 Emmys across the ceremony and earlier awards, including best comedy series.
Medical drama The Pitt retained the top drama prize for a second consecutive year.
Jean Smart added another trophy to her collection for Hacks, winning best comedy actress for her role as sharp-tongued comedian Deborah Vance.
It was her fifth Emmy for the character and made Smart the first performer to win the comedy actress award for every season of a series’ run.
“What a ride this has been!” Smart said while accepting the award.
Only Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who won the same category six times for Veep, has come close to matching the achievement.
Matthew Rhys was another standout, becoming the first actor to win two lead acting awards at the same Emmy ceremony.
He took best comedy actor for Widow’s Bay and best actor in a limited series for Netflix thriller The Beast in Me.
“I feel slightly giddy and a little bit dizzy,” the Welsh actor said.
Reflecting on his success, Rhys added, “I'm from a small country, and I'm glad we get moments to put our flag on the map and say we punch higher than our weight sometimes in Wales.”
Noah Wyle won his second consecutive Emmy for playing Dr Robby Robinavitch in The Pitt, the HBO Max medical drama set in a Pittsburgh trauma centre.
Calling the moment “overwhelming”, Wyle said, “This is the only club I've ever wanted to join. Thank you for accepting me.”
Widow’s Bay also picked up acting, directing and writing awards, while DTF St. Louis won best limited series.
Michael J. Fox received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for his long-running advocacy for Parkinson’s research and treatment.
Speaking from a wheelchair, Fox reflected on the support he received from the entertainment industry after his diagnosis.
“It’s because you stood up for me,” he told the audience.
