A magnitude 5.5 earthquake has struck central Myanmar as the country recovers from last month’s deadly 7.7 temblor.

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake shook central Myanmar on Sunday morning near the city of Meiktila, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor comes as Myanmar remains deep in relief operations following the powerful 7.7 magnitude quake that devastated the region on March 28.

The latest quake's epicenter was located roughly between Mandalay — the country’s second-largest city, which suffered severe losses last month — and Naypyitaw, the capital, where several government buildings were damaged during the earlier quake.

So far, there have been no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties from this latest tremor. It is one of the strongest aftershocks among the hundreds that have followed the March 28 disaster, which has killed over 3,600 people and injured more than 5,000.
