Moldova signed a €30 million ($32.5 million) agreement with the French Development Agency on Monday to improve energy efficiency, President Maia Sandu announced after meeting French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
The deal, aimed at reducing energy waste and lowering costs, is part of Moldova’s broader push for energy independence amid tensions with Russia, which has been accused of exacerbating an energy crisis in the country.
Macron warned that Russia is intensifying efforts to destabilize Moldova, citing airspace violations by Russian drones and missiles and attacks on democratic institutions.
Sandu echoed concerns, stating that Moscow seeks to undermine Moldova’s democracy and use its territory to threaten Ukraine. She urged continued European support for Kyiv, emphasizing that Russian aggression extends beyond Ukraine’s borders.
Moldova, which borders Ukraine, aims to join the European Union by 2030 and has been seeking stronger Western alliances to counter Russian influence.
