Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his desire for stronger support from US President Donald Trump while criticizing Kyiv’s exclusion from negotiations to end his country’s war with Russia.

Speaking to reporters at Ankara Esenboğa Airport after a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Zelenskyy stated, “I would like Trump to be more on our side. Many Republicans and Democrats support us, and I do not want to lose that support.”

He further observed that, “We see efforts to remove President Putin from political isolation, but that is their decision—they are negotiating.”

These remarks followed recent discussions between U.S. and Russian officials in Riyadh, marking the first direct meeting between American and Russian diplomats since the conflict began on February 24, 2022.

Zelenskyy also questioned the legitimacy of any peace negotiations that do not include Ukraine. “When they present their plans for ending the war, it raises questions for us. Where do we fit at the negotiating table? The conflict is happening in Ukraine, and it is Ukrainians who are suffering,” he said.

He emphasized, “We seek a just, lasting, and sustainable peace.”

Highlighting the need for credible security guarantees, Zelenskyy noted, “If this is only a ceasefire rather than the end of the war, it is still an important step towards de-escalating the conflict.”

The president stressed that effective peace talks must involve both Ukraine and Russia, and that representation should extend beyond the European Union to include the broader European continent. He also mentioned discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, who had engaged with EU leaders in France, with further talks planned on this issue.
