All 12 people on board a plane that crashed near Butler Memorial Airport in the U.S. state of Missouri have died, according to local authorities.

The crash happened on Sunday near the airport in Butler, a small city around 60 miles south of Kansas City in the United States.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed the deaths in a statement posted on social media.

"At this time reports indicate all occupants (12 total) have perished," the agency said.

Skydivers among the victims

According to Bates County Emergency Management, those on board included 11 skydivers and the pilot.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene following the crash, with state troopers, local police officers and the Bates County Sheriff's Office taking part in the response.

Investigation under way

Officials have closed Business 49 near the airport in both directions while emergency services and investigators continue their work.

The Bates County Sheriff's Office said the road would remain shut "for an undetermined amount of time".

The cause of the crash has not been established.

The Federal Aviation Administration has not yet issued a statement on what may have led to the aircraft coming down.
