Two oil tankers and a tugboat caught fire in separate incidents in the Strait of Hormuz after allegedly using unauthorised shipping routes, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Thursday, 5 November.

According to the IRGC, one of the tankers struck a mine while attempting to navigate a passage south of the strait.

In a separate incident, a second vessel, described as a supertanker, caught fire while leaving a shipping route in the eastern part of the waterway.

A tugboat that approached the supertanker to help extinguish the flames also caught fire, the IRGC said.

The latest incidents follow similar reports on Wednesday (4 November), when the IRGC said four oil tankers had been destroyed after striking naval mines while attempting to use a prohibited route south of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Iranian force said the four tankers remained ablaze and that two other vessels had been seized.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre reported an incident of a vessel being struck by unknown projectiles in the northeast of Lima, Oman on Wednesday.

It is unclear if the report is related to the same vessels being referenced by the IRGC Navy.

The incidents come amid continued tensions over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and a major route for global oil supplies.

The IRGC did not provide details about possible casualties or the extent of the damage to the vessels involved in Thursday's incidents.
