At least four people were killed and 12 others injured when an Italian military helicopter serving with the European Union's peacekeeping mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina crashed near the town of Brcko on Thursday, according to Italian media reports.

The aircraft came down in the village of Gorice, located in the Brcko district, local authorities said. The district's mayor told Italy's ANSA news agency that a further 12 people were injured in the incident.

Images published by regional media showed the helicopter overturned and severely damaged, with sections of the aircraft scattered across the crash site.

A representative of EUFOR, the European Union Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina, confirmed that one of the mission's helicopters had crashed but did not immediately provide information about casualties or the cause of the accident.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed condolences following the incident.

“My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those who, as part of the mission to promote peace and stability in the region,” Meloni wrote in a message posted on X.

The helicopter had been operating as part of Operation Althea, the EU-led military mission responsible for supporting implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement, which ended the Bosnian war in 1995 and continues to underpin the country's political framework.

Authorities have not yet announced what caused the crash, and an investigation is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The accident marks one of the most serious incidents involving international peacekeeping forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina in recent years.
