A 62-year-old man died on Wednesday after floodwaters swept his car into the sea on the Greek island of Rhodes, as torrential rain flooded roads, stranded vehicles and disrupted transport across the island.

The man was found unconscious near Stegna Beach, on the island’s east coast, near Archangelos, after four cars were swept into the water, according to the Greek Coast Guard. Despite the emergency response, the man died.

Local media reported that the man, a hotel employee, had gone to retrieve his car when it was swept away by floodwaters.

Roads flooded across the island

Severe flooding hit several areas, including Ialysos, Afandou, Faliraki and Archangelos, stranding vehicles and disrupting traffic.

Authorities closed several roads, including the route between Archangelos and Malonas, after a large rock fell onto the road, damaging the surface and safety barriers. A bridge near Archangelos was also temporarily closed as a precaution.

An emergency alert urged residents and visitors to avoid unnecessary travel and follow official instructions. Rhodes Mayor Alexandros Koliadis warned people not to cross flooded roads or streams, whether by car or on foot.

Heavy rainfall and further disruption

The National Observatory of Athens recorded 264 millimetres of rain at its Rhodes weather station by 12:50 on Wednesday, including 202 millimetres over approximately six and a half hours.

Lightning also sparked a house fire in Ialysos and temporarily knocked a regional station of Greece’s public broadcaster, ERT, off air after a separate strike damaged its electrical system.

Schools and municipal sports facilities were shut, while some bus services were suspended.

Forecasters warned that heavy rain and thunderstorms would continue in parts of eastern and southern Greece through Wednesday evening, with powerful northerly and northeasterly winds sweeping across the Aegean.
