At least 12 people, including three children, have been killed in a Russian attack on the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, a day after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a deal to ease sanctions on Russian diesel.

Another 14 people  were wounded, two of them critically,  Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. The fate of 12 more people who may have been in the affected buildings is still being established, and rescuers are continuing to search the rubble.

Russia dropped five glide bombs on the city in the early hours of Saturday, according to local Governor Mykhailo Semikin. Regional authorities said 26 residential buildings were damaged, including a five-storey apartment block partly reduced to rubble.

Among the dead was a six-year-old girl. Her grandfather, Anatoliy Chumniy, wept as rescuers laid her body on the ground. “Her birthday would have been at the end of the month,” he said.

Zaporizhzhia had more than 700,000 residents before the war. It lies less than 30 kilometres from the front line and has been struck repeatedly in recent months. A total of 13 Ukrainian regions came under attack overnight.

Ukrainian President links attack to U.S. decision

Zelenskyy directly connected the bombing to Washington’s decision to ease sanctions.

“Today, Russia said thank you for the lifting of sanctions on diesel exports,” he said, accusing Moscow of treating any easing of pressure as a signal to keep fighting.

Trump announced the deal on Friday while Ukrainian and European officials were in Miami for talks with U.S. negotiators on a joint proposal to end the war. Zelenskyy said it caught Kyiv by surprise and called it “a weak decision by strong partners”.

The White House is seeking to curb fuel prices, which have climbed sharply during the U.S. conflict with Iran. Trump has also criticised Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries, while Kyiv wants both sides to halt attacks on energy infrastructure.

Parts of Kyiv were left without power, halting the metro for the second time this week. Russian President Vladimir Putin said after a call with Trump that an immediate resumption of peace talks was unlikely.
