Torrential rains brought by Typhoon Dujuan have caused landslides and flooding along Japan’s Pacific coast, killing four people and leaving six others missing, public broadcaster NHK reported on Tuesday.
A woman in her 60s was killed after mud flowed into her home in Yokosuka, Kanagawa prefecture. Three other people, aged between their 50s and 80s, were also reported dead following landslides in Kanagawa and neighbouring Chiba.
Rescue teams were clearing debris in Miura, south of Tokyo, as they searched for people reported missing after landslides struck homes.
The storm has also disrupted electricity supplies, with about 45,000 households without power in the region, according to Tokyo Electric Power Company.
Heavy rain caused flooding in several areas, including Sakura in Chiba, where a nearby river overflowed. Resident Richard Yonamine said it was the first time in more than three decades that he had experienced flooding at his home.
Heavy rain also caused widespread floods last month in Chiba, stranding passengers at the busy Narita airport, with media saying more than 10,000 cars were damaged beyond repair.
Typhoon Dujuan comes during a year marked by unusually intense rainfall, floods and tropical cyclones across several parts of the world.
