A powerful typhoon was approaching Japan’s Pacific coast on Monday, bringing torrential rain, strong winds and a heightened risk of landslides across the Kanto region, including Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
Typhoon Dujuan was forecast to pass close to the Tokyo metropolitan area later in the day, with conditions expected to deteriorate rapidly. Heavy rain had already affected the Izu Islands and parts of Japan’s Pacific coast, with some areas recording more than 300 mm of rain since Saturday (19 September).
Authorities issued the highest-level landslide emergency warning at Level Five for Oshima in the Izu Islands, about 110 km south of Tokyo. The weather agency warned that rainfall could intensify from Monday afternoon as the storm approaches Kanto.
An evacuation order covering 1.67 million residents across Tokyo and surrounding prefectures had been issued as of 3 p.m. local time (0600 GMT), according to NTV, citing the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
Authorities also warned of the possible formation of linear rain bands, which can bring extremely heavy rainfall to narrow areas for several hours and increase the risk of flash floods and landslides.
The approaching typhoon has also disrupted major events. Organisers of the Asian Games in Aichi Prefecture postponed the equestrian eventing competition until Tuesday because of the weather.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also delayed her departure for New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly by four hours. She is now expected to leave Tokyo at 11 pm local time.
