Baku is preparing to host its 10th Formula 1 race, with the city’s streets once again set to transform into one of the most demanding circuits on the F1 calendar.
One of the biggest challenges comes at Turn 8, where the track runs alongside Baku’s Old City walls. At just 7.6 metres wide, it is the narrowest section of the Formula 1 calendar, leaving drivers little room for error at high speed.
Building the temporary circuit requires a major logistical operation. More than 1,400 local engineers, technicians and logistics workers are involved in installing and dismantling the track infrastructure.
According to Subhan Manafzade, Manager of the Venue Delivery Department at Baku City Circuit, local teams have significantly reduced the time needed to prepare the venue. The grandstands can now be installed in 12 weeks, while the track itself takes around five weeks to complete.
The race has also grown in scale. Organisers have added new grandstands over the past three years, with a new stand this year bringing total seating capacity to 21,000.
Beyond the circuit, businesses along the track are preparing for the influx of international visitors.
Local cafés and creative spaces are planning F1-themed events and live screenings, while promoting Azerbaijani culture, crafts and local brands to visiting fans.
Travel arrangements have also been eased for international spectators. An order signed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev allows Formula 1 fans to obtain visas at Baku’s international airports, making entry more convenient during race weekend.
As Baku marks a decade of Formula 1, the city is combining a technically demanding street circuit with expanding local expertise, tourism and a wider programme of activities for international visitors.
