U.S. President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Denmark and Greenland on Friday that would significantly expand Washington’s military presence on the Arctic island and give the United States what he described as permanent authority over its security.
Trump called the arrangement an “Infinite Life” agreement, saying it had no end and addressed Washington’s longstanding security concerns over Greenland.
“No U.S. adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval,” Trump said on Truth Social.
He said the United States would immediately begin developing a larger military presence in Greenland and claimed the arrangement would come at no cost to Washington.
Denmark confirmed that an agreement is expected to be signed next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, although it still requires approval from the Danish and Greenlandic parliaments.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement would strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic while respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.
The deal therefore stops short of transferring sovereignty over Greenland to the United States, despite Trump’s previous calls to acquire the territory.
Reuters reported that negotiations have included provisions allowing Greenland to play a role in Trump’s planned Golden Dome missile defence system, as well as measures aimed at limiting Chinese influence and investment on the island.
The United States already operates Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland under longstanding defence agreements with Denmark.
Trump has repeatedly argued that greater U.S. control of Greenland is necessary for national security because of its strategic position in the Arctic and growing competition with Russia and China.
Earlier this year, his refusal to rule out using military force to obtain the territory triggered a major dispute with Denmark and Greenland, both of which insisted the island was not for sale.
Friday’s agreement offers Washington a significantly expanded security role without transferring ownership of Greenland.
“This is a dream come true for the United States of America,” Trump said, describing the arrangement as “historic and special”.
