European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Monday a €200 million ($232 million) deal with Greenland, called the Global Gateway Partnership Package, aimed at strengthening the EU-Greenland partnership, amid growing U.S. interest in the Arctic island.
The Global Gateway Partnership Package will support investments across several priority sectors, including education, fisheries, satellite and cable connectivity, hydropower and critical raw materials.
The package will also fund projects designed to improve everyday life in Greenland, including better housing, sustainable tourism and support for small businesses. The EU said the investments will create new economic opportunities for Greenland’s population while contributing to a sustainable, prosperous and peaceful Arctic region.
“Greenland can count on the EU. That was my message during my last visit. Today, I am back to deliver the real results of our close cooperation,” von der Leyen said.
“This will create new opportunities and a strong and engaged EU in both Greenland and the Arctic, because Greenland is a strategic ally and a trusted friend,” she added.
Von der Leyen also reaffirmed the EU’s support for Greenland’s sovereignty and its right to determine its own future, following repeated expressions of interest from U.S. President Donald Trump in acquiring the territory.
“Greenland’s future is for the people of Greenland and Denmark to decide. No one else,” she said. “Territorial integrity, sovereignty, the inviolability of borders. These are fundamental principles of international law.”
The funding announcement came after von der Leyen signed a joint EU-Greenland declaration with Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and part of the NATO alliance through Denmark, has attracted growing geopolitical attention because of its strategic location, mineral resources and proximity to North America.
Nielsen described the 27-member EU as “a loyal and trusted friend”, particularly at a time when Greenland faces “new challenges that we cannot tackle alone”.
“Through these challenging times, your support to us is unfailing,” Nielsen said. “You have stood by us and continue to stand by us. We feel it and are deeply grateful.”
Von der Leyen also said she wants to double EU's budget support for Greenland to €530 million (around $616 million) under the 2028 to 2034 Multiannual Financial Framework.
