Greenland has issued a “strong warning” to a U.S. oil company linked to President Donald Trump after drilling equipment was brought ashore without the required government approvals, according to British media.
Greenland’s Department of Industry and Minerals said machinery intended for oil exploration was landed on the island’s eastern coast last month despite the company not having the necessary permits, The Telegraph reported.
“A strong warning will be sent” to the licence holder, the department said. Drilling cannot begin without approval from Greenlandic authorities.
The project is being financed by Greenland Energy, a Texas-based company established last year that has taken a majority stake in the exploration project.
The company claims as much as $1 trillion worth of crude could lie beneath the Jameson Land region of eastern Greenland.
Greenland Energy Chairman Larry Swets acknowledged in June that a company representative had incorrectly told local residents that permission to bring the equipment ashore had already been granted.
The company said last week that discussions with Greenlandic regulators had since been “constructive” and that it remained encouraged about securing the approvals needed to begin drilling.
The controversy comes amid renewed U.S. attention on Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Days after residents reported the drilling equipment arriving, Trump posted an AI-generated image showing himself overlooking a Greenlandic village with the words “Hello, Greenland!”
Trump has repeatedly stressed Greenland's strategic importance to the United States. In January 2025, he drew international criticism after refusing to rule out using military force to gain control of the territory, saying it was necessary for US national security.
He has since moderated his rhetoric but described Greenland as “vital” to his proposed Golden Dome missile-defence system.
Greenland Energy has denied any connection between its exploration project and proposals for the United States to take control of the territory.
