Israel said on Tuesday it killed Nael Abu Obeid, the commander of Hamas’ Rafah Brigade, in an airstrike in the southern Gaza Strip, as strikes continued despite the ceasefire.
Hamas sources also confirmed Abu Obeid’s death, according to Reuters.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz initially announced that the military had targeted the Rafah Brigade commander, saying the strike followed the killing earlier this week of the commander of Hamas’ Khan Younis Brigade and other senior figures.
The Israeli military and Shin Bet later confirmed Abu Obeid had been killed.
Abu Obeid, also known as Abu Atiya, headed the Rafah Brigade as well as Hamas’ operations division, according to Israel.
He took command of the brigade following the killing of its previous commander, Muhammad Shabana, in an Israeli strike on 13 May 2025. Israel said that strike also killed senior Hamas leader Mohammad Sinwar.
The Israeli military accused Abu Obeid of working to rebuild Hamas’ capabilities in Rafah and planning attacks against Israel.
His killing came during another day of Israeli strikes across Gaza. At least five Palestinians, including two children, were killed in separate attacks in northern and southern Gaza on Tuesday, according to Palestinian health officials and medical staff cited by Reuters.
A U.S.-brokered ceasefire has been in place since October 2025, but Israeli strikes have continued. More than 1,300 Palestinians and four Israeli soldiers have been killed since the truce began, according to figures cited by Reuters.
Israel and Hamas have repeatedly accused each other of violating the agreement, complicating efforts to advance the broader ceasefire plan, which includes further Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the disarmament of Hamas.
