Russian strikes on the Kyiv region overnight killed 27 people, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and a local official have said. Zelenskyy added that the Ukrainian capital was under "virtually nonstop attack" from drones.
Russia is planning an offensive in northern Ukraine, possibly targeting the capital Kyiv or the city of Chernihiv, Ukrainian news outlet LIGA.net has reported, citing a closed-door briefing to journalists given by Deputy Head of the Presidential Office, Pavlo Palisa.
The outlet reported that Palisa said intelligence from several sources indicated that Russian military leadership had been tasked with planning several options for operations in northern Ukraine.
However, he added that Ukraine didn't see the creation of Russian offensive units in those areas at present, according to LIGA.net.
Russia troops have captured three villages in Ukraine, Russian state news agency Tass has reported, citing Moscow's Defence Ministry.
The Ministry said that the village of Khrapivshchyna in the northeastern Sumy region and villages of Andriivka and Rubizhne in the eastern Donetsk region had been taken.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin on 29 August for talks on bilateral cooperation, security matters and pressing international issues.
The meeting follows Lukashenko’s talks with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on 28 August and Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov’s earlier visit to Minsk.
The discussions come amid heightened regional tensions, including an unannounced visit to Moscow by CIA Director John Ratcliffe on 25 August, during which Washington reportedly urged Ukraine to pause strikes on the Russian capital.
A care home for the elderly and those with disabilities was damaged after a Russian drone strike on a warehouse in the village of Myla near Kyiv triggered a secondary detonation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.
Zelenskyy said that the Ukrainian capital was under "virtually nonstop attack" from drones, adding that multiple other regions were also hit overnight by more than 260 drones.
At least 27 people were killed in an overnight attack on the Kyiv region, Teymur Tkachenko Head of the Kyiv Regional Administration, said in a post on Telegram.
He added that 42 people had been injured and 381 people had been evacuated from the Bucha district, where the strike took place.
Three men died following attacks by Kyiv across the Belgorod in western Russia, the region's Acting Governor, Alexander Shuvaev, said in a statement on Telegram.
He said Ukraine has launched seven attacks, using artillery, aircrafts and rockets, as well as drones. A total of 14 people were injured in the attacks, he added.
Russia's air defences neutralised 313 Ukrainian drones over the country, as well as over the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea overnight, Russian state news agency Tass has reported, citing Moscow's Defence Ministry.
Seven people, including two children, were injured in Ukrainian strikes on Rostov, southern Russia, overnight, the region's Governor Yury Slyusar said.
Two apartment blocks in the city of Rostov-on-Don were damaged, as a result of falling drone wreckage, Slyusar added.
"UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] wreckage was found in a warehouse," he said in a statement on Telegram, but didn't say who the facility belonged to.
A warehouse used by Russian retailer Ozon was attacked by a drone overnight, causing a fire, the company said on Telegram.
All employees were evacuated ahead of the strike at the warehouse in Rostov, southern Russia and the fire was immediately extinguished, Ozon said.
"We have temporarily suspended operations at the facility so emergency services can inspect the area and ensure it is completely safe," the firm said.
