A supertanker which was cruising through the Strait of Hormuz was targetted by an unknown projectile off the coast of Oman, according to an Iranian news agency which said the vessel was “violating” navigation rules at the Strait of Hormuz on 1 October.
The semi-official FARS News Agency reported on Friday that the supertanker capable of carrying 2.5 million barrels of oil was hit 8 kilometres off Oman’s coast and is burning at the Strait of Hormuz after it used the “unauthorised” route south of the waterway.
The agency close to the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) quoted local sources for its report but did not refer to origin of the attack while the force’s Sepah News website neither reported on the incident nor claimed responsibility.
The report said the incident was confirmed on Thursday night by the maritime security authority United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) in a statement on its website.
Tehran has blocked shipping traffic at the Strait of Hormuz since the joint Israeli-U.S. airstrikes on 28 February which lasted 40 days, shutting the passage to vessels of its adversaries.
Citing Iran's Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), which oversees traffic at the Strait, the agency said that a number of oil tankers had been targeted in the waterway over the past few days and the last three were owned or rented by the United Arab Emirates.
The tankers, the Al Ruwais, Sinbad and Mersin Prosperity vessels, attempted to sail through Hormuz several times in the past two months, according to authorities. They are in PGSA’s updated “list of non-compliance” vessels, the report said.
