A drone entered Bulgarian airspace from Romania on Saturday and exploded near the village of Kardam, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said, adding that there were no casualties or damage to infrastructure.
The unmanned aerial vehicle entered Bulgarian airspace at 8:10 a.m. local time and exploded in a sunflower field close to the Romanian border, Radev said in a statement.
The blast occurred about 1,000 metres from Bulgaria’s compressor station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, which stretches from Turkey to Ukraine, and around 200 metres from a Romanian compressor station.
Drone incursions that Western governments have linked to the Russia-Ukraine war have become more frequent, increasing concerns over whether NATO members have adequate defences against emerging security threats.
Radev said security would be strengthened around strategic sites across Bulgaria, while surveillance along the Bulgarian-Romanian border would also be increased.
Authorities cordoned off the area where the drone exploded. Investigators are expected to determine the exact type of aircraft after examining the site and recovering its remains.
Radev said the drone had not been detected earlier in either Bulgarian or Romanian airspace, highlighting continuing difficulties in identifying and tracking unmanned aircraft.
He said the incident demonstrated that drone detection and identification remained a challenge for both countries.
Radev also pointed to delays in the delivery of high-precision radar systems to the Bulgarian military and said measures would be taken to address the issue.
