Italy is considering Armenia as a possible location for a migrant reception or repatriation centre, according to media reports.
According to Corriere della Sera, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is seeking broader European support for a tougher common approach to irregular migration.
Rome reportedly wants to expand the use of facilities modelled on Italy’s agreement with Albania, with similar centres potentially established outside the European Union and financed by the EU.
The preliminary list of possible partner countries reportedly includes Rwanda, Ghana, Senegal, Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania, Egypt, Uganda, Ethiopia, Uzbekistan, Montenegro and Armenia.
Italy is also proposing closer links between EU trade benefits for developing countries and their cooperation on the readmission of migrants.
The initiative forms part of Meloni's efforts to turn Italy's migration policy into a broader European strategy combining border management, economic cooperation and partnerships with third countries.
Germany is reported to support the initiative, while France did not sign a joint letter backed by 22 states. Rome has also remained critical of Spain's migration policy, which the Italian government considers too permissive.
It remains unclear whether Armenia has received any official or informal proposal.
