Mexican authorities are working to restore U.S. avocado export inspections after Washington suspended operations in the western state of Michoacán over security concerns.
Despite the disruption, the Mexican Hass Avocado Association says it does not expect supplies to the United States to be significantly affected in the short term, citing existing inventories and produce already moving through the supply chain.
The suspension was announced on Wednesday as part of a wider security alert in Michoacán, Mexico's largest avocado-producing state and the main supplier to the U.S. market.
In a letter to its members, the Mexican Hass Avocado Association sought to reassure exporters and buyers.
"While the situation continues to evolve, current supply chain conditions are expected to support near-term U.S. market needs," it said, adding that existing stock should continue to meet customer demand.
U.S. officials have not said when inspections will resume.
A Michoacán government official said authorities believe the security alert may have been prompted by violence following the arrest of alleged cartel leader Alfonso Fernández Magallón, also known as "La Quiringua".
The official said a bus was set on fire after the arrest in what investigators suspect was retaliation by supporters of the criminal group.
"They saw that danger and stopped operations," the official said, referring to the decision to suspend inspections.
Authorities are also investigating unconfirmed reports that a U.S. Department of Agriculture inspector may have been threatened.
Michoacán has long struggled with organised crime, with criminal groups accused of extorting avocado growers and exporters. Similar security incidents forced temporary suspensions of U.S. avocado inspections in both 2022 and 2024.
In response to the latest incident, Mexico has deployed more than 1,500 soldiers and National Guard personnel across the state. President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government is working with the U.S. Embassy on a security plan to protect inspectors.
