Since 1946, nine people have served as UN Secretary-General, the closest thing the world has to a chief diplomat. The role carries no army and little hard power, yet its occupants have shaped how nations respond to war, famine and global crises. Here are five who left the deepest mark.
Swedish economist and diplomat Dag Hammarskjöld transformed what had been a largely administrative post into an active force in world affairs. During the 1956 Suez Crisis, he helped organise the UN Emergency Force, the organisation's first true peacekeeping mission, establishing a model of neutral, lightly armed troops deployed to keep warring sides apart that is still used today.
He later worked to stabilise the Congo as it descended into civil conflict shortly after independence, a mission that ultimately cost him his life. He died in a plane crash in September 1961 while travelling to ceasefire talks. He remains the only person to have been awarded a posthumous Nobel Peace Prize.
Stepping into the role after Hammarskjöld's death, the Burmese diplomat U Thant became the first non-European and first Asian Secretary-General.
His decade in office coincided with some of the Cold War's most tense moments. Behind-the-scenes channels he opened during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis are widely credited with helping the U.S. and the Soviet Union find a way to de-escalate.
He was also an outspoken critic of the Vietnam War and pushed the UN to engage more seriously with the wave of decolonisation sweeping Africa and Asia, positioning the organisation as a forum for newly independent states rather than solely for the great powers.
landmark UN reforms than for what emerged after he left office.
The Austrian diplomat served two terms overseeing a UN grappling with oil shocks, the Yom Kippur War and ongoing Cold War proxy conflicts. Today, he is best known for revelations that surfaced after his tenure, showing he had concealed his wartime service in a German army unit linked to atrocities in the Balkans.
The scandal, which broke during his later campaign for the Austrian presidency, remains one of the most serious controversies to have affected anyone who has held the UN's top job.
The first Secretary-General to rise through the UN's own ranks rather than arrive as an outside diplomat, Ghana's Kofi Annan was also the first sub-Saharan African to hold the post.
He pushed through significant management reforms, elevated the UN's role in the global response to HIV/AIDS and championed the 'Responsibility to Protect' doctrine, the principle that the international community has an obligation to intervene when governments fail to protect their own citizens from mass atrocities.
His tenure was not without controversy. The UN's handling of the Oil-for-Food Programme in Iraq and its failure to prevent the Rwandan genocide, which occurred before his term but while he headed peacekeeping operations, drew heavy criticism.
Even so, Annan and the UN jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 for their efforts to build a more effective and peaceful world organisation.
The current Secretary-General, and a former Prime Minister of Portugal and UN High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres has positioned climate change as the defining challenge of his tenure, repeatedly urging wealthy nations to cut emissions more quickly.
He steered the UN through the COVID-19 pandemic, calling for a global ceasefire and equitable access to vaccines, and has been a vocal advocate for multilateralism at a time when many major powers have shifted towards unilateral action.
His time in office has also been tested by the war in Ukraine and the Israel–Gaza conflict, both of which have exposed the limits of what the Security Council, constrained by the veto powers of its permanent members, can realistically achieve.
