More than 260,000 people were evacuated to safety in China's northeastern Liaoning province after Typhoon Bavi brought severe flooding and widespread disruptions.

Authorities said heavy rain was expected to continue through Tuesday, with extreme downpours in some areas as the storm pulled large amounts of tropical moisture northward and fed humid air into northern China.

In Shenyang, Liaoning's provincial capital, videos posted on Chinese social media showed a lighthouse that had severed its high-voltage power line drifting through floodwaters along main roads and passing under a bridge.

Schools and training institutions were ordered to suspend classes, while transport services were widely disrupted in northeastern cities including Shenyang and Jilin.

Bavi formed in the Pacific Ocean 13 days ago and, at one point, covered an area roughly the size of France.

Chinese meteorologists said its warm core remained unusually well preserved after landfall in eastern China on Saturday night, helping it retain moisture as it moved north towards the Korean peninsula.

Intense rainfall is expected when Bavi, currently classified as a tropical storm, slows further and starts to release all the moisture that it has been holding.
