Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated U.S. President Donald Trump on the 250th anniversary of American independence, saying Russia and the United States share a special responsibility for maintaining global security as the world's two largest nuclear powers.

According to the Kremlin, Putin sent Trump a telegram marking the anniversary of U.S. Independence Day, in which he highlighted the historical significance of the Declaration of Independence and called for constructive relations between Moscow and Washington.

Putin said the signing of the Declaration of Independence represented not only the birth of the United States but also “a significant milestone in world history”.

Putin highlights historical ties

In his message, Putin noted that Russia had supported the North American colonies in their struggle for independence from British rule.

He also pointed to periods of cooperation between the two countries, saying Russia and the United States had been allies during major conflicts of the 20th century.

“We were allies in two world wars, together we freed humanity from the horrors of Nazism, and then played a vital role in laying the foundations of the modern world order,” Putin said.

Focus on nuclear powers' role

The Russian leader stressed that Moscow and Washington have a unique responsibility in international affairs because of their military capabilities.

“And today, Russia and the United States, as the two largest nuclear powers, bear a special responsibility for ensuring security and stability on a global scale,” Putin said.

He added that maintaining dialogue and cooperation between the two countries would benefit not only their own populations but the wider international community.

Call for constructive relations

Putin expressed confidence that relations between Russia and the United States could develop based on equality and mutual benefit.

“I believe that establishing constructive, equal, and mutually beneficial relations between Moscow and Washington is in the interests not only of our peoples but also of the entire international community,” he said.

The message comes as relations between Russia and the United States remain under close international scrutiny, with both countries continuing to play central roles in major global security and diplomatic issues.
