China’s southern coastal provinces of Fujian and Guangdong are bracing for more torrential rain after Typhoon Saudel triggered widespread flooding, swept away vehicles and caused a three-storey building to collapse.
In Fuding, Fujian, firefighters waded through waist-deep floodwaters to rescue elderly residents, while flooding in nearby Jinxi village inundated homes and brought down a three-storey house.
Authorities have closed schools, suspended public transport and activated emergency flood measures across several coastal areas.
More than 83,000 people have been evacuated in Fujian, while hundreds of thousands have been relocated across Zhejiang and neighbouring provinces since late August.
Saudel made its third landfall along Fujian’s coast on Thursday after strengthening over the South China Sea. It is the seventh typhoon to hit China this year and the third to strike Yuhuan in eastern Zhejiang in less than two months, a sequence the China Meteorological Administration described as extremely rare.
Experts link the unusual pattern to El Niño, which can steer typhoons towards China’s eastern coast.
The UN has warned that El Niño could intensify further into 2027, increasing the risk of prolonged extreme weather.
Experts also warn that continued heavy rain could trigger landslides and other secondary disasters, with rivers already above warning levels in some areas.
Hui Su, a professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, said “this typhoon season, we tend to see stronger typhoons form towards the east and they travel long distances and they get much stronger when they actually reach land”.
He added that this year’s typhoon season could extend into December due to prolonged warm weather.
