A powerful heatwave sweeping across Europe has triggered deadly conditions, with authorities issuing urgent warnings as extreme temperatures continue to climb.

In Spain, officials say at least 1,029 people died in June from heat-related causes. This is the highest monthly toll recorded for the month since 2015.

Data from Spain’s Daily Mortality Monitoring System showed the deaths included both direct heatstroke cases and fatalities linked to worsening pre-existing health conditions.

The Spanish State Meteorological Agency said June was Spain’s second-hottest on record, with average temperatures 3.2 degrees Celsius above seasonal norms.

The heatwave has intensified concerns over climate-driven extreme weather across southern Europe.

Portugal temperatures near 47°C

Neighbouring Portugal has raised its highest weather alerts and expanded emergency support for vulnerable groups.

Interior Minister Luis Neves warned temperatures could hit 47°C in the coming days and urged the public to avoid fire-risk activities.

Authorities have banned open-air burning, barbecues and the use of machinery that could create sparks, amid heightened wildfire fears.

Officials also warned against discarding cigarette butts or parking vehicles near dry vegetation, as fire conditions worsen across the Iberian Peninsula.
