Hundreds of people were left homeless after a massive fire in Indonesia's capital Jakarta affected more than 300 houses, according to state-run media on Tuesday.

The fire broke out late Monday in the Kemayoran district of central Jakarta, destroying a densely populated residential area and leaving around 620 people homeless, according to Antara News agency, citing local officials.

The Central Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency said the blaze affected 330 households across several neighbourhood blocks, forcing large-scale evacuations.

Agency head Syarifudin said, “There are approximately 620 people who lost their homes.”

Firefighting efforts were hampered by narrow access roads, heavy crowds and residents trying to salvage belongings as the fire spread through the area.

Authorities said the blaze was brought under control at around 11:30pm local time and fully extinguished by 4:15am on Tuesday, with 35 fire engines and 175 personnel deployed.

Officials said damage assessments and relief operations for displaced families are ongoing, while state media Antara News reported three injuries.
