Iran says it is holding “positive” talks with Oman on reopening the Strait of Hormuz to shipping traffic, while an official source familiar with the negotiations has said an “agreement is within reach”.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran had a “positive assessment” of its discussions with Omani officials on the Strait of Hormuz “both at technical and political levels”.
Speaking on state-owned IRIB TV, Baghaei said negotiations between the two countries, which lie on either side of the strategic waterway, are focused on “designating safe routes for passage of vessels”.
Amid reports that Tehran and Muscat are close to agreeing a 30-day memorandum of understanding, Baghaei said the “outcome of talks will be announced after they are finalized”, without providing a date.
A reliable source in Tehran told AnewZ, on condition of anonymity, that the Iran-Oman deal was expected to be announced by Thursday.
In a related development, an official source was quoted as saying that an “agreement is within reach” between Tehran and Muscat.
Press TV, which is affiliated with the state broadcaster IRIB, said the two sides “have entered a new phase” in discussions on establishing safe shipping corridors through the Strait of Hormuz, despite what it described as U.S. “obstructions”.
Meanwhile, the clock is ticking as Tehran and Washington have less than two weeks before the expiry of the 60-day ceasefire memorandum of understanding signed by the Iranian and U.S. presidents on 17 June.
The 14-point memorandum, mediated by Pakistan, was intended to serve as a precursor to a lasting peace. However, it has encountered a major obstacle, particularly over differing interpretations of Clause 5 concerning the reopening of the strategic waterway linking the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
