A Pakistani court sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan to 14 years in prison and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to seven years on Friday, over corruption charges tied to the Al Qadir University Trust.
The verdict, announced inside Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, where Khan has been detained since August 2023, follows accusations that the couple received billions of rupees and valuable land in exchange for releasing £190 million ($236 million) to property tycoon Malik Riaz in 2020. Both Khan and Bibi deny the allegations and plan to challenge the ruling.
The National Accountability Bureau alleges the deal with Riaz caused a $239 million loss to the national treasury. The case stems from a 2019 settlement between Riaz and the UK’s National Crime Agency, which identified and returned the amount to Pakistan.
Khan, arrested over the case in May 2023, was released on bail after the Supreme Court declared his initial detention unlawful.
