At least four people have died and 17 others were injured after a liquid gas truck overturned and exploded in Santiago, Chile’s capital, authorities confirmed on Thursday.
Police said the driver, who reportedly lost control of the vehicle before the crash, was among those killed.
The truck was affiliated with the local gas company Gasco. The prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the cause of the incident. Gasco has not yet responded to requests for comment.
The explosion occurred in Renca, a northern district of Santiago near a major highway and industrial area. Dramatic footage shared on social media showed large plumes of fire and thick smoke rising into the sky.
Firefighters said the blast was felt within a radius of 150 to 200 metres and damaged at least 50 vehicles.

President Gabriel Boric said debris from the explosion struck three nearby businesses, though no extensive structural damage has been reported beyond the immediate area.
Claudio Orrego, governor of the Santiago metropolitan region, confirmed that five people remain in serious condition.
“One has burns covering 100% of their body with imminent risk to their life,” he said.
Emergency crews continue to assess the site as investigators work to determine the exact circumstances of the crash and subsequent explosion.
