At least 18 people were injured on Thursday after a stun grenade exploded at an Interior Ministry vocational training centre in Russia’s Republic of Komi, according to state media.

Russia’s RIA news agency said the blast occurred at the training facility in the regional capital, Syktyvkar, during a personnel training exercise. Deputy Health Minister Alexey Kuznetsov said all those injured were taken to hospital.

“The condition of four people is extremely serious, five more are in serious condition, and three are in moderate condition,” Kuznetsov said

Officials said around 200 people were evacuated from the building following the explosion. Firefighters later extinguished a fire that broke out after the blast.

The regional Investigative Committee said an investigation has been opened into the incident. Investigators and forensic experts are working at the scene to establish the cause of the explosion.
