Families of the Jeju Air crash victims visited the runway embankment at Muan International Airport on Monday, marking the first anniversary of the fatal accident.

The aircraft struck the embankment during a failed landing on December 29, 2024, killing 179 of 181 people on board. After attending a memorial ceremony, bereaved families toured the damaged site, inspected pieces of the concrete structure, and placed a birthday cake for victims with December birthdays.

Families also burned letters to the victims, hoping their messages would reach them. The visit comes amid ongoing calls for answers, as the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board has yet to release a final report into the crash, raising concerns about the investigation’s credibility.

A preliminary report indicated that both engines had suffered bird strikes and that the left engine was shut down before the attempted landing. However, flight data and cockpit voice recordings stopped in the final seconds, leaving many questions unanswered.

Some relatives have criticized investigators for focusing mainly on pilot error while neglecting factors such as runway safety and embankment design. Experts warn that air disasters usually result from multiple causes and caution against drawing conclusions from incomplete evidence.
